Governor Gavin Newsom, Democrat of California, surprised many people and outraged some of his most liberal supporters by saying recently that it was “deeply unfair” to allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s youth and college sports. Globe Opinion writer Carine Hajjar here argues that even if Newsom was simply bending to political winds after President Trump’s victory, he is prompting a useful debate for the Democrats.

The following is a lightly edited transcript of the March 13 episode of the “Say More” podcast. James Dao: Welcome to “Say More” from Boston Globe Opinion. I’m Jim Dao, the editorial page editor. There used to be a saying, “When the United States sneezes, the world catches a cold.” But you could say that is true of China today. Its economy could well surpass the US in a few years. Wu is walking into a hearing designed for political theater, not truth-seeking. The GOP-led House Oversight Committee will rely on loaded questions, out-of-context statistics, and scare tactics to sell its dystopian vision of liberal cities in collapse — an attack on Democratic governance as much as immigration itself.

Running for mayor in 2021, Mayor Michelle Wu didn’t exactly conceal that she intended to expand bus lanes and bike infrastructure. In fact, it was a campaign promise. And she won by a commanding margin. Bus and bike lanes may well turn into an issue in her reelection campaign, but if so, it’ll cut both ways. Yes, there are lots of voters who find bike lanes annoying, and may gravitate to challenger Josh Kraft as a result. There are also people enjoying a faster bus commute or a safer bike ride.
