Welcome back to The Onion: 20 Years Later, where we review the print issue from 20 years ago, find out what’s still funny and examine the cultural impact. Today, we revisit April 20, 2005. Happy Easter! In 2005, Easter occurred in March, but Catholicism remained front and center due to the death of Pope John Paul II. Plus, let’s revisit Johnny Depp’s early-career TV show and such mid-2000s hot topics as tasers and TV shows on DVD. If you’re new here, welcome! I invite you to sign up below.

Welcome back to The Onion: 20 Years Later, where we review the print issue from 20 years ago, find out what’s still funny and examine the cultural impact. Today, we revisit April 13, 2005. I spent time this week at my Jesuit alma mater, where I visited the college newspaper office for the first time in almost 20 years. Coincidentally, the newspaper office was where I learned of Pope John Paul II’s death in early April 2005. Last week, we explored The Onion’s web-only reaction to the pope’s death.

Welcome back to The Onion: 20 Years Later, where we review the print issue from 20 years ago, find out what’s still funny and examine the cultural impact. Today, we revisit April 6, 2005. It’s been a long couple of weeks, as I had some family medical stuff going on. Hopefully, last week’s issue made sense. And thanks for the comments pointing out what I omitted or overlooked.

Welcome back to The Onion: 20 Years Later, where we review the print issue from 20 years ago, find out what’s still funny and examine the cultural impact. Today, we revisit March 30, 2005. Welcome to readers who found me through the “Hammurderer” issue from 2022! I have no idea why Substack suddenly boosted that, but I’m grateful! This week’s issue illustrates the adage that “History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes,” a quote (incorrectly) attributed to Mark Twain.

Got ahead of myself on the Spurs, but I correctly ID'd the Suns' fraud!

@ClaireMPLS Maybe not outlandish anymore, but Wemby wins a first-round series. Also, Suns miss the playoffs.

Yup. At least as late as April 2005, The Onion was finding ways to insert the terror-level color scheme into stories, as I just wrote about. https://t.co/OlLT3fNDq4
