    These two problems are capable of resolution in one fell swoop. Allow easier entry and a Social Security number to everyone who comes uninvited. Vet all who enter to weed out criminals, terrorists and those from nations whose stated goals are clearly against our democratic interests. Make them pay into Social Security and Medicare with none of those funds accruing to their own benefit until they complete the stringent and lengthy process of becoming a citizen or obtaining permanent resident status.

    Jeren Drew, 32, came to Edmonton from Montreal trying to get a stand-up comedy career going but fell on his luck. One of his employers stepped up to help him get fed and into a downtown Edmonton apartment building. "Last time I'd seen him, he said to me 'Thank you'. I know what he means by thank you. I picked him up off the street, gave him a place to eat and a roof over his head," explained Todd Ross, Drew's friend.

    Edmonton's Telus World of Science is shining more light on the "small" fire that caused its closure last week, saying it was an issue with its HVAC system and spread smoke around. The fire started last Monday in the main exhibition hall inside an air handling unit.     Overdose deaths in Alberta took one of the biggest drops to end 2024 versus the rest of Canada. The latest data from the province shows 69 people died from opioids in September 2024 - that's about a 50 per cent decrease than 2023. It's the same double-digit decrease for August at 39 per cent, July at 40.5, and June at 53. Across 2024, the decrease was 38 per cent compared to all of 2023. "It is dramatic, and noteworthy," said Dan Williams, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.

    Abbey Robson remembers this picture fondly. "Christmas Eve was never Christmas Eve," said Robson, daughter of Ashley Burke. "It was always my mom's birthday."Born in Nova Scotia, Robson and her mom, Ashley Burke, started a new life in the Edmonton area when she was 10 years old. Both leaned on each other for support. "We go for long drives and I would talk to her," said Robson. "I helped her a lot the last few years." "I did the best I could obviously I have regrets," she added.
