This week marked the 79th anniversary of the D-Day battle at Villers-Bocage when German armoured warfare expert Michael Wittmann led a force of six Tiger tanks against allied troops. During the frantic action, he destroyed 14 Allied tanks, two anti-tank guns and 15 personnel carriers.

If you’re after a mission statement for irregular warfare, you can’t get much better than Winston Churchill’s entreaty in 1940 to the newly-created Special Operations Executive to “set Europe ablaze”. The purpose of the Special Operations Executive was to conduct sabotage, reconnaissance and spying in occupied Europe during World War II. It helped supply, train, direct and on occasion lead local resistance movements.
