Around this time of year 30 years ago, I was entertaining myself around New York City, being rude to book agents. Rude by Midwestern standards, anyway. My method was to call their offices and see if they could find time to see me the next day for 10 minutes or so. Short notice, to be sure, but I’d had a book on the NY Times best-seller list for about 10 weeks by then, and I needed an agent to work out the deal for the 2 sequels I had been offered.
