A lot depends on whether the Trump administration continues to “walk back” on announced tariff rates, such as those imposed on the automotive industry. “If nothing changes, the US goes into recession,” says Iain Stealey, international CIO within the global fixed income, currency and commodities group at JP Morgan. More “walk backs” can avert recession, he says, but for now investors don’t know how much economic damage has already been done.

US stocks rose on Wednesday as President Donald Trump backpedaled on his threat to remove Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and indicated a potential deescalation of the trade war Trump started earlier this month. The Morningstar US Market Index rose 1.8%, the benchmark S&P 500 Index gained 1.8%, and the more tech-heavy NASDAQ rose 2.7%. All nine Morningstar Style Boxes rose, with the biggest gains coming from large-cap growth stocks, which jumped 2.6%.
