Architects & Firms The Center For Care & Discovery is the flagship of the University of Chicago Medicine’s Hyde Park campus. Rafael Viñoly Architects of New York, in collaboration with Cannon Design of Chicago, designed the 10-story hospital, which was completed in 2013. Facilities and architecture are first-rate. But when doctors, staff, and visitors need a cup of coffee or a light lunch, the hospital cafeteria may not be their first choice.

The venerable and verdant campus of Rice University in Houston began in 1910 with a Beaux-Arts master plan by Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson of Boston. Over the next two decades, architect Ralph Adams Cram began to fill this axial arrangement of lawns, courtyards, and quadrangles with a series of handsome brick-and-stone buildings, distinguished by arcades and spires, in a fanciful variation on the Byzantine Revival style.

Eight-Seventy-Five North Michigan Avenue is one of Chicago’s most recognizable Modernist landmarks. Formerly known as the John Hancock Center, the 100-story mixed-use skyscraper, with condominiums on floors 44–92, was designed by the SOM team of Bruce Graham and Fazlur Rahman Khan. Completed in 1969, its tapering elevations are distinguished by steel cross bracing. Given the eminent architectural lineage and the posh location, you might expect its upper-floor apartments to be fabulous.

This is what the lighting designers at New York–based One Lux Studio (OLS) wanted to avoid in the lobby of 320 South Canal Street, a 51-story office tower designed by Goettsch Partners for a West Loop site just south of Chicago’s Union Station.

The benefits of mass timber—a structural system of engineered lumber formed by joining wood boards into larger members, each stronger and more durable than its constituent parts—are well known. Wood is a renewable resource and therefore has sustainable attributes. As trees grow, they capture carbon dioxide (CO2), a primary cause both of air pollution and global climate change. The production of concrete and steel, on the other hand, releases vast quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere.

If Mies van der Rohe’s seminal yet sadly unbuilt Brick Country House—designed in 1923 as an abstract composition of orthogonal planes extending far beyond the volumes they enclose—had been rendered in stone, it might look like Enso House II. This complex of parallel and perpendicular walls, made of locally quarried Mexican cantera, stretches out onto a high desert plateau north of San Miguel de Allende.
