Sometimes, it’s more unsettling than usual how far Gov. Greg Abbott will go to beat up on immigrants fleeing their homes because of violence, persecution or crippling economic necessity. This time he is on a campaign that he knows will hurt the health of children and their parents and perhaps cause the deaths of some. Abbott has issued a decree that hospitals ask patients if they are U.S. citizens.

As a veteran civil rights attorney, I have often been struck about how quickly a leader’s legacy disappears from one generation to the next. Among a university’s variety of missions is not capitulating to politicians’ whims as University of Texas at Austin recently did by abolishing its scholarship support program for undocumented students. Universities once were sanctuaries political police couldn’t enter. They helped shape society’s future, to which diversity of thinking and diversity of students and faculty contribute.
