    TEL AVIV, Israel — The new U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, told NPR he is "outraged" at the leaders of Britain, France and Canada for condemning Israel's new military offensive in Gaza. " The prolonged suffering for everybody is on Hamas, and I'm outraged that the U.K., Canada, France, they're blaming the wrong perpetrator," Huckabee, the former Republican governor of Arkansas, said in an interview Wednesday at a U.S. Embassy office in Tel Aviv.

    President Trump said that the United States will hold direct talks with Iran on its nuclear program, starting Saturday.   "We have a very big meeting, and we'll see what can happen. And I think everybody agrees that doing a deal would be preferable to doing the obvious," Trump said, as he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office. During his first term, Trump withdrew from the 2015 landmark nuclear deal with Iran negotiated by then-President Barack Obama.

    Israel has launched a wave of deadly attacks against Gaza, a move that appears to have put an end to the fragile ceasefire that came into effect almost two months ago and aimed at ending almost 16 months of war. The Gaza Ministry of Health said Tuesday the death toll from the Israeli wave of attacks in Gaza was now at least 300 with more than 1,000 people injured. Khalil Al Daqran, the spokesman of the health ministry, confirmed the numbers to NPR in a brief interview.
