A bail hearing has been delayed for a Sault Ste. Marie man charged with manslaughter after his 13-year-old daughter died of a fentanyl overdose while in his care — to the dismay of the child’s mother.
On Thursday, the Ontario Court of Justice heard that Ken Walker, legal counsel for Paul Firlotte, intends to bring an application forward to remove himself as Firlotte’s lawyer. No reasons were given by Walker for bringing the application forward.

A police disciplinary hearing involving misconduct allegations against a Sault Ste. Marie Police Service officer has been delayed until next month — mainly due to the fact the officer at the centre of the proceedings is currently behind bars.
Const. Jarrott Forsyth — who is facing three counts of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act — is being held in custody on criminal charges for allegedly breaching a probation order.

A series of images created by an Anishinaabe artist in Sault Ste. Marie will soon be prominently displayed at cultural sites in the city’s downtown core as part of Ontario Culture Days.
Lucia Laford — also known by her Anishinaabe name, Waawaaskone Kwe — was one of eight artists chosen by the province-wide festival to highlight their work through its Creatives in Residence program, which is now in its fifth year.
The end result is a multi-site art installation entitled Dibaajimo.

Maliyah Walls has started paying rent to a new landlord, but it’s not the property owner: Instead, she’s been directed to pay a mortgage lender who claims the property owner is now in default.
It all started on May 16, when an employee of Spectrum Property Management showed up at her Morin Street home, claiming the owner of the property — 13756327 Canada Inc. — hasn’t been paying the mortgage and could potentially have the home repossessed.
“He was wearing a bulletproof vest,” said Walls.
