Elaine Edna Hinson, who supported civil rights advocacy and education through her work at the American Foundation for Negro Affairs after a long federal career, died Monday, April 14. She was 99. Born Dec. 14, 1925, Hinson was raised in North Philadelphia, where she and her siblings attended General George Meade Elementary School. She graduated from Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1943, where she was active in physical fitness programs and a member of the gymnastics team.

Orien E. Reid Nix, a respected Philadelphia consumer affairs reporter, media consultant, and tireless Alzheimer’s disease advocate, died Tuesday, June 17. She was 79. Her daughter Traci confirmed her death to NBC10. Reid Nix spent 26 years in broadcasting, earning the trust of viewers with hard-hitting investigations and service reporting. She began her career at KYW Newsradio in 1972 before moving to KYW-TV in 1973.

Services will be held Saturday for Richard (Naba’a) B. Muhammad, a staunch defender of Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam and longtime editor-in-chief of The Final Call newspaper. According to the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), of which the publication was a member, he died June 6 at 64. In a message sent June 7, NNPA President and CEO Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. informed publishers of his death.

Larry Miller, a former Philadelphia Tribune police reporter and freelance journalist known for his strong opinions and passionate storytelling, died Monday, June 9, after a battle with cancer. He was 71. Born Lawrence Duncan Miller on Sept. 15, 1953, he attended Community College of Philadelphia and was engaged in civic life across the city. He spent from 2004 to 2016 at The Philadelphia Tribune as a reporter covering crime and urban issues.

Gary Edward Holmes, a beloved car salesman known for his sharp style and quiet strength, died June 1. He was 76. Born May 8, 1949, in Philadelphia, Holmes was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and graduated from South Philadelphia High School, where he ran track and played softball. He later earned an associate degree from Wilberforce University in Ohio. Holmes spent 34 years as a car salesman at Pacifico Ford, where he was affectionately known as “Doc,” before retiring.
