Mayor Muriel Bowser has made no secret of wanting the Washington Commanders to return to D.C., and it looks like she’s one step closer to making that hope a reality. NBC4 reporter Mark Segraves broke the news Wednesday that Bowser and the Commanders are close to finalizing a $3 billion deal to build a new stadium for the team at the old RFK site.

Manassas residents could see higher tax bills and utility costs starting July 1, as city officials work toward finalizing a $327.9 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Even though the city’s real estate tax rate would stay flat at $1.26 per $100 of assessed value, rising home values mean most residents will still pay more. The average residential property is now assessed at just over $456,000 — up about 8% from last year.

Private-sector job postings have plunged. Contracts are being canceled. And across Northern Virginia, laid-off federal contractors are showing up at job centers in growing numbers — a trend officials fear will worsen this summer if deeper federal cuts take effect. “I’m preparing for the worst,” said David Hunn, executive director of Virginia Career Works Northern Region, which runs job centers in Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties.
