Wales Over 75s football team welcomed England to the Football Association of Wales’ Dragons Park training ground for the second ever Aneurin Bevan Shield, named for the founder of the NHS. Despite a strong from the visitors Wales eventually took control to run out winners by four goals to nil with the pick of the bunch a 25-yard-thunderbolt from Newport’s Handley Brustad which rattled in from the underside of the crossbar.

FRIENDS and well-wishers attending a service in honour of Newport rugby legend Brian Jones are welcome to wear the club’s famous black and amber colours. Mr Jones, who was affectionately known as ‘BJ’ and Mr Newport due to his long affiliation with the club, died aged 89 earlier in April. Jones made 330 appearances for the Black and Ambers and was a member of the sides that beat Australia in 1957 and New Zealand in 1963.
