“Tapestry of Life” is the theme of the 2025 National Skilled Nursing Care Week (NSNCW), which begins its longstanding annual run Sunday. Providers and other aging services stakeholders are encouraged by the American Health Care Association to host events that “shine a light on the individuals who reside, work and volunteer in nursing centers while adhering to infecting control requirements,” according to the group.

Finally got around to seeing that Bob Dylan movie, and while I’m not the biggest fan of his, I was impressed, especially with how many songs I recognized. “The Times They Are A Changin’” was one of them, and it came to mind again when the subject of leadership in senior care recently came up. If long-term care leaders haven’t adapted to a new way of guiding their teams lately, they’re in for a choppier-than-necessary trip. The times, they have a-changed.

Barring any last-minute delays by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, enforcement of its previously twice-delayed updated nursing home operational guidance will kick in Monday. The agency announced a delay March 7 of a planned March 24 implementation date. That’s one reason many believe the new system will proceed as planned next week. It originally was scheduled for late-February implementation.

We can thank Shakespeare for making the original observation that “strange bedfellows” can be united under stressful circumstances. The Pennsylvania Health Care Association and its local healthcare union bring us the most recent example. On Wednesday, PHCA and SEIU Healthcare PA issued a joint statement saying that the oft-times foes were joining forces. Not 100% nor permanently, of course. But because of “dire healthcare workforce challenges” that threaten all of their livelihoods.
