1 INTRODUCTION Urban and agricultural development modify the hydrologic and thermal regimes of streams in a variety of ways. For example, impervious surfaces in urban areas reduce the infiltration capacity of soils and cause more incoming precipitation to be manifested as overland flow (Ferguson & Suckling, 1990; Hollis, 1975).
