A former Owensboro Police Department officer who was indicted last year for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman is being sued by the alleged victim in Daviess Circuit Court. The suit was filed by “Jane Doe,” who is only identified by her initials in the complaint, against former OPD officer Aleph Zavala and against OPD Chief Art Ealum. The lawsuit is currently winding its way through circuit court, with the last ruling occurring last month. The civil lawsuit is the second case Zavala faces.

The Greater Owensboro Music Commission is seeking community partners involved in music to help spread the word about the organization’s upcoming “music census.”The plan is to launch the census in July and gather information from anyone involved in music performance, production, education and other avenues. Steve Johnson, facilitator for the Music Commission, said the census results will help the community identify changes that would help promote music.

An overnight fire damaged a care facility early Thursday morning, forcing officials to evacuate the residents and move them to a facility outside the city. The fire was reported at 12:23 a.m. at Davco Personal Care Home, 2526 West 10th St.In an email, Owensboro Fire Department Chief James Howard said when firefighters arrived, they encountered fire and smoke coming from the west end of the facility.

Jeremiah T. Byrd, who pleaded guilty in March to shooting his former girlfriend on a deserted road near Ben Hawes Park, was sentenced to a total of 25 years Friday morning in Daviess Circuit Court. Byrd, 18, was a juvenile when he fatally shot Gay Mee Paw, 16, in the head in June 2023 on Willet Road, just outside Ben Hawes Park.

The Daviess County Detention Center was holding several inmates with both criminal charges and holds from Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the jail this week. In cases where a person has both a criminal charge and an immigration detainer, or ICE hold, the federal agency waits until after an inmate has finished his or her criminal case, and completed any sentence, before detaining the person for deportation, Jailer Art Maglinger and Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Van Meter said.
