Provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tells an encouraging story about the efforts to address the drug overdose epidemic. But much work remains to be done. According to CDC’s updated provisional estimates, fatal drug overdoses in the nation decreased by 14.5% from June 2023 to June 2024, from 113,154 to 96,801. For the same time period, fatal drug overdoses declined by 15.5% in New York, from 6,917 to 5,845.
