A young woman was told by a member of staff at a mental health hospital in London that she would “go to hell” if she took her own life, a court has heard. Alice Figueiredo, 22, was being treated on the Hepworth ward at Goodmayes Hospital, part of the North East London Foundation NHS Trust (NELFT), when she killed herself in July 2015.

Alice Figueiredo was 22 when she died at Goodmayes Hospital in Redbridge, north-east London, in July 2015. She had been detained on the unit since February of that year, in which time the court was told she had tried to harm herself 18 times with bin bags found on the ward.

The mother of a young woman who died in a psychiatric hospital had warned staff that there would be a “fatality on the ward” weeks before she died, a court heard. Alice Figueiredo, 22, died at Goodmayes Hospital, a mental health facility in Redbridge, north-east London, on 7 July 2015. Benjamin Aninakwa, 53, who denies the charges of gross misconduct, was ward manager of Hepworth Ward at Goodmayes Hospital at the time of the alleged offences.

Transgender youth charity Mermaids was mismanaged, an investigation has found. A two-year probe by the Charity Commission found there were problems with the way the organisation was run after a rapid period of growth. However, the regulator found no evidence for some other complaints against Mermaids, including that it provided medical advice to young people.
