That’s how long it took for the No. 15 Santa Barbara City College women’s basketball team to earn another victory against conference rival Ventura College, as the Vaqueros defeated the Pirates, 70-55, on Wednesday. With the win, Santa Barbara improved its record to 14-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. However, this game was more important than many of the players may have realized.

James Reach had the hot hand. He already had 26 points for Santa Barbara City College as he drove down the lane. His finger-roll layup with one second remaining hit the back of the rim, then the front, and rolled out. The Vaqueros fouled the rebounder with 0.3 seconds left on the clock, and Ventura College escaped with a 61-57 win on Wednesday. “I thought we had some pretty good looks yesterday,” said head coach Devin Engebretsen.

Santa Barbara City College basketball teams will host Moorpark College on Wednesday, Jan. 8, to open Western State Conference play. The women’s game is scheduled for 5 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7 p.m. in the Sports Pavilion. The Vaqueros women are ranked No. 15 in the state with a 12-3 record, according to Monday’s CCCWCBA State Poll. The Moorpark College Raiders women are ranked No. 4 with a 12-4 record. The Raiders have won five consecutive games and 12 of their last 13.

The Vaqueros softball team is now taking sign-ups for the 2024-25 season. “We are looking to add depth to the team, specifically in the circle by adding one or two pitchers to the spring roster,” said new head coach Tyler Heil.
