Significantly absent in the long obituaries for Pope Francis in both the New York Times and the Washington Post were mentions of his deep concern for the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza. In Francis’s last public message on Easter Sunday, just hours before he died, he had called for a ceasefire in Gaza, and condemned the “deplorable humanitarian situation” there.

The one-sided New York Times coverage of the latest news from Israel and Palestine continues, unchanged. *Times reports on the release of people held in captivity continue to be slanted. Israelis who are freed are called “hostages,” and human interest details accompany the detailed coverage. Palestinian are “prisoners,” even though many of them, most likely hundreds, were also held without trial or any due process — and the sparest of personal details accompany the Times reports.

The usual one-sided coverage of Palestine continued in this Sunday’s New York Times. Right at the top of the front page is a large photograph of one of the four Israeli women soldiers who were just released in Gaza and returned to Israel. It is accompanied by a long article. Inside, on page 6, is another detailed report, with first-hand human interest details about the four Israeli women.
