Septoplasty is a commonly performed procedure worldwide for nasal obstruction associated with a deviated nasal septum. In the UK, with long waiting lists for septoplasty, there is a large and unexplained variation in the incidence of this procedure between individual NHS ENT providers, by as much as a factor of five [1]. Consequently, questions are raised about its rationale and value.

Findings In this cohort substudy that included 508 patients within a randomized clinical trial, nasogastric tube insertion rates within 4 weeks after surgery were significantly higher after TORS than TLM (85 of 189 [45%] vs 10 of 126 [8%]).
