The last time I came through Cancun airport it was 2006. I was with my girlfriend, Mary, and I had an engagement ring hidden in a sock in my rucksack. Going through customs I was, inevitably, singled out for a bag search. As an official with a baton dangled the sock inquisitively, I pleaded with him not to make me get down on one knee there and then. Fortunately, he laughed; Mary didn’t notice and we were on our way.
