Thousands of people in Vancouver dove into 2024 by taking a dip into the chilly waters of English Bay for the annual Polar Bear Swim. The event - now in its 104th year - has been happening since 1920 and included live music and food trucks for patrons from noon until 4 p.m.CityNews spoke to some of the swimmers to get their thoughts on the chilling excursion. "It's my first time here doing that and it's amazing," one local said.

Mounties in Burnaby say two young men were stabbed in a fight early Monday morning near Gilmore Station. According to the Burnaby RCMP, officers were called to the area after hearing reports of a fight between a group of youths near Dawson Street and Gilmore Avenue at around 1:00 a.m., not long after the calendar flipped to 2024. Police say some reports described the youths using knives and pepper spray in the altercation.

By James Paracy The City of Vancouver says green bins will only be collected once every two weeks in January and February. The city says the change takes effect the week of Jan. 8. A post on X from the city explains that winter green bin volumes are much lower than in the summer, and cooler temperatures minimize odours coming from the bins.

As we ring in the new year on Jan. 1, we also ring in the PWHL's first-ever season and game. Ella Shelton scored the historic opening goal, Corinne Schroeder earned the first-ever shutout, and New York toppled Toronto 4-0 in the inaugural Professional Women's Hockey League game on Monday. Alex Carpenter, with one goal and one assist, Jill Saulnier and Kayla Vespa added the other goals for New York (1-0-0). Schroeder made 29 saves.

B.C.'s police watchdog is looking for witnesses after an elderly man was found dead near Port Alberni in Sproat Lake last week. The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) says local RCMP responded to a call at around 6:45 p.m. on Dec. 13, about the well-being of the man driving a green Pontiac Sunfire. A police officer found the man and spoke to him at 8:40 p.m., but the IIO said another call to the RCMP at 10:25 p.m. said the man hadn't made it home. Two days later on Dec.

The Vancouver Whitecaps will play host to Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF in the 2024 Major League Soccer season as the Canadian team celebrates its 50th anniversary. The league released its 2024 season schedule on Wednesday, with the Whitecaps having a bye on the opening weekend of the season. The club's home opener will be held on March 2, when it hosts Charlotte FC, and it will host Toronto FC on April 6. The Whitecaps will host Messi and Inter Miami on May 25, 2024.

Langley police say an elderly woman is seriously injured and can't identify herself after being hit by a vehicle in Aldergrove on Monday. Mounties say she was hit by a white Dodge pickup truck while walking along 268 Street and crossing 26A Avenue just after 4:20 p.m. The truck driver stopped and gave the woman first aid treatment until emergency crews arrived. The woman was then transported hospital, where she remains in "critical condition" with life-threatening injuries.

Vancouver police say 268 people have been arrested and over $100,000 in merchandise was recovered as part of a recent shoplifting crackdown dubbed "Project Barcode."The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) operation focused on violent shoplifters in the city between Nov. 30 and Dec. 15, and saw plain-clothes officers seize 31 weapons at 30 participating retailer locations. Const. Tania Visintin says Project Barcode's results were "significant," and adds the VPD will keep working to combat shoplifting.

B.C. is spending $5.4 million to repair the Cache Creek crossing near Kamloops. According to an announcement made Tuesday, work on the Cache Creek Crossing Restoration Project is scheduled to start within the next few weeks. "Travellers passing through Cache Creek will soon have a safer, more reliable journey," the province stated in a release.
