Thousands of people in Vancouver dove into 2024 by taking a dip into the chilly waters of English Bay for the annual Polar Bear Swim. The event - now in its 104th year - has been happening since 1920 and included live music and food trucks for patrons from noon until 4 p.m.CityNews spoke to some of the swimmers to get their thoughts on the chilling excursion. "It's my first time here doing that and it's amazing," one local said.

Mounties in Burnaby say two young men were stabbed in a fight early Monday morning near Gilmore Station. According to the Burnaby RCMP, officers were called to the area after hearing reports of a fight between a group of youths near Dawson Street and Gilmore Avenue at around 1:00 a.m., not long after the calendar flipped to 2024. Police say some reports described the youths using knives and pepper spray in the altercation.

By James Paracy The City of Vancouver says green bins will only be collected once every two weeks in January and February. The city says the change takes effect the week of Jan. 8. A post on X from the city explains that winter green bin volumes are much lower than in the summer, and cooler temperatures minimize odours coming from the bins.

As we ring in the new year on Jan. 1, we also ring in the PWHL's first-ever season and game. Ella Shelton scored the historic opening goal, Corinne Schroeder earned the first-ever shutout, and New York toppled Toronto 4-0 in the inaugural Professional Women's Hockey League game on Monday. Alex Carpenter, with one goal and one assist, Jill Saulnier and Kayla Vespa added the other goals for New York (1-0-0). Schroeder made 29 saves.

B.C.'s police watchdog is looking for witnesses after an elderly man was found dead near Port Alberni in Sproat Lake last week. The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) says local RCMP responded to a call at around 6:45 p.m. on Dec. 13, about the well-being of the man driving a green Pontiac Sunfire. A police officer found the man and spoke to him at 8:40 p.m., but the IIO said another call to the RCMP at 10:25 p.m. said the man hadn't made it home. Two days later on Dec.
