Given the limits of American media, no truth-telling can keep pace or correct the record – even when the stakes are impossible to quantify. Scholars and pundits alike have tried to wrestle with these phenomena amidst our current post-truth malaise.

One of the unmitigatedly Black customs of America’s July 4 celebration has become the intentional circulation of Frederick Douglass’ “What to the Slave is the 4th of July?” speech. It is a custom that was ‘woke’ before the term became a political football for right-wing provocateurs hellbent on extending the culture wars in perpetuity. Circulating the speech amongst Black social networks has been a ritual rite of passage for those sending and receiving the speech.

America, apparently, suffers from a new epidemic. US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called the impact of loneliness and isolation “devastating.” His 83-page report accompanying the advisory defines loneliness as “a subjective distressing experience that results from perceived isolation or inadequate meaningful connections.”The interest of the US government in this phenomenon is not unique; Several other countries have recently introduced ministers of loneliness.
