Monument unveiled to recognize Old Georgetown Cemetery

A new granite monument stands in the Old Georgetown Cemetery, on North Hamilton Street, as it was unveiled before a crowd Wednesday. Terry Thomas shared history of restoring the Old Georgetown Cemetery, a project that has been underway for eight years and still ongoing. Though he didn’t know where to start eight years ago, Thomas went right to work anyway, he said. “We made a decision to start cleaning this place up,” Thomas said.
The Creekers are coming to ‘break down the walls’ of traditional Bluegrass music

The Creekers are on the rise. Starting out as a four-piece Bluegrass band just a few years ago, The Creekers have now grown and found a sound all their own, they said “Creeker-grass.” Band members are: Scott Sutton on banjo; Anna Blanton on fiddle; Jagger Bowling on bass; Ashton Bowling on cajon; Allen Hacker vocals and guitar; and Tanner Horton on vocals and guitar. Jam sessions in 2022 quickly turned a group of friends into a band, Horton said.

Ward Hall added to C-1 zone

Ward Hall, a Greek Revival mansion now operated under Ward Hall Preservation Foundation, was approved for a zone change last week as part of Georgetown/Scott County Planning Commission meeting June 12. Ward Hall changed from an A-1 (agricultural) zone to a C-1 (conservation) zone.
Georgetown and Elijah Craig join to create ‘Bourbon Genesis’

Georgetown now has a bourbon unique to itself. With the “Bourbon Genesis” launch Friday, June 13, bourbon enthusiasts and aficionados lined downtown waiting to get their hands on a bottle of Elijah Craig “Bourbon Genesis” Single Barrel. Bourbon Genesis is more than a bottle of bourbon for Georgetown/Scott County Tourism. Bourbon Genesis is “a new campaign inviting bourbon enthusiasts and history lovers to discover the birthplace of America’s native spirit,” according to a press release.
Scams continue as law enforcement receive multiple reports

Both Scott County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) and Georgetown Police Department (GPD) are wanting to alert the community of different scams. Earlier this month SCSO, on social media, re-shared a warning from a month prior regarding a “warrant scam.” “We are (once again) receiving complaints of an attempted phone scam where an individual is identifying himself as an employee of the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and telling individuals that they missed jury duty and have a warrant,” states the post.
Movie theater sold, to reopen in July

Theatres of Georgetown are under new ownership, though it is unclear who that is. The theater, previously owned by Roaden Enterprises, closed its doors as of yesterday (Thursday), according to a Facebook post made earlier this week, but plans are to reopen. “The property and operations have been sold,” the social media post states.
Moore finds faith in pursuit of music

John Thomas Moore, of Harrodsburg, grew up to appreciate gospel music and grunge, between learning to sing and perform in church to listening to Nirvana, Moore developed his own taste in music, he said. “I grew up Southern Baptist, so I was in the church,” Moore said. “Gospel music is obviously a real big part of my life growing up. … I got introduced to secular music by my dad. He grew up listening to rock and roll.
Community members share voices in Barr’s monthly office hours

A group of community members have been taking advantage of Republican Representative Andy Barr’s office hours offered the second Monday of every month between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on the third floor of Scott County Courthouse. Amelia Cloud, a democrat, and several others, including Ken Beitler, and Don Burgess have been attending Andy Barr office hours for “several months,” Cloud said. She was unaware office hours were offered at first, but as soon as she found out, she began going.
Juneteenth celebration to be held downtown Saturday

Community members gathered at Wesley United Methodist Church Thursday, June 5 to gear up for a Gospel Explosion happening this Saturday, June 14, at the downtown pavilion from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to celebrate Juneteenth. The Gospel Explosion being put on by Echoes of Our Ancestors is a free public event to “commemorate the spirit of freedom and faith through praise and worship, culminating in a special grand finale honoring emancipated ancestors through music and dance,” states a press release.
