How long is too long when it comes to riding your bike? We all have our own personal gauges when it comes to working such things out. More often than not it comes down to plain old time commitments. An hour at lunchtime, for example, or a requirement to meet a weekend afternoon appointment. For big events, when we have all the time we need, we tend to use common sense and a touch of self-preservation.

This year's British Gravel Championship is some way off, but we have a cast-iron prediction: whoever wins a tricolour jersey on September 14 will have well and truly earned it. Having journeyed up to Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire last week to meet organiser Red On Sports and experience the course for myself, I can confirm that riders will mostly be either climbing or descending, with some heart-in-mouth technical moments and impressive views thrown in for good measure.

As bike riders, that moment when cold, dank winter begins to recede and the sun takes over is always a special one. For many of us it's cause for rejoicing, particularly in the UK, where the big glowing orb in the sky chooses to absent itself in favour of wet grimness far too often. However, while a lot of us get to watch the weather forecast warming up with a mental mini fist-pump, the rest are not quite so lucky.

UK time trialling governing body Cycling Time Trials has announced a new partnership with aerodynamic clothing brand Nopinz. In what is currently an open-ended deal, Nopinz will supply national champions' jerseys, caps and prizes, and will work with CTT on collaborative promotions that they hope will extend the reach of both brands.

Artisan frame-building is a dying art that needs caring for and preserving – that is the view of one UK builder who has launched a project to help ensure its conservation. Paul Gibson is a frame-builder at Yorkshire's Ellis Briggs, which was established in 1936. He has launched what he calls "a national mission to save a traditional craft".
