B.C. has issued an environmental assessment certificate for the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 in Delta, a move the government says will help to safeguard provincial interests as the project moves forward. Proposed by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, the project is a three-berth expansion of Deltaport, the Port of Vancouver’s largest container terminal.

By Ethan Reyes, special to the North Delta ReporterA new three-on-three basketball tournament happening Labour Day weekend is paying tribute to a beloved Delta basketball coach who dedicated his life to the game and the players he mentored throughout his career. The inaugural Delta Dunc-fest, happening Sept. 2-3 at Delta Secondary School in Ladner (4615 51st St.), is named in honour of Duncan Anderson, who taught science and coached basketball in six of Delta’s seven high schools.

A memorial and candlelight vigil will mark International Overdose Awareness Day in Delta. The Delta Overdose Community Action Team (DCAT) and City of Delta are hosting two events on Thursday, Aug. 31 – one in North Delta and one in Ladner – to honour and raise awareness of the 140 local lives lost to the toxic drug supply since rising deaths related to illicit substance use prompted the province to declare a public health emergency in 2016.

A program that rescues excess food from local farms and distributes it free to those in need is expanding thanks to a $10,000 grant. Delta-based Earthwise Society, Vancouver Food Runners and the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen recently received a Grow Grant from the Giustra Foundation to expand their rescued food program, and are looking for local farms open to donate their surplus produce to support the initiative.
