Consultation on the the future of the playing fields next to the Tilling Green Community Centre begins this Friday, May 23. Landlord East Sussex County Council agreed to seek local’s people’s views on the “intention to dispose of” the land at the end of April. The decision was made by Nick Bennett, ESCC’s lead member for resources and climate change. Both the land and the community centre are currently let to Rye Partnership on a thirty-year lease, which was granted in 2022.

There’s a chance to talk about anti-social behaviour in Rye next week – and to hear from some of the groups and organisations trying to find a solution. It takes places at Tilling Green Community Centre on Saturday, May 31 between 10:30am and 12:30pm. The meeting has been arranged by Rother District councillor for Rye and Winchelsea, Simon McGurk who says the two hour meeting will include Sussex Police.

Rye Town Council agreed to funding requests from local charities totalling £2,260 during the meeting at the town hall on Monday, May 19. Local scouts and guides are set to benefit, along with Rye Camera Club and the charity Family Support Network. The new approvals mean just £2,740 remains in the council’s general grants reserve for 2025 / 26. 1st Rye Scouts Group receives £750 towards sending local scouts to the 2025 Kent Scouting Festival.

Rye’s beacon on Udimore Road was lit at 9:30pm on Thursday, May 8 to end the day’s events marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day. For deputy mayor Chris Hoggart, who set the beacon alight, it was also a chance to remember his father’s wartime service. With a crowd of thirty people gathered in the field and on the road, he paid tribute to the wartime generation. “Let us remember those who gave their lives at home and abroad, who sacrificed all to allow us to enjoy the peace we have today.

Rye joined villages, towns and cities all over the world to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday, May 8 with events commemorating the end of the war in Europe in 1945. The day began at 9am with town crier Paul Goring making a special proclamation from the top of St Mary’s church tower. At lunchtime, Rye Town Hall was the focus for an event which began with Ryebellion Drummers just after 1pm.
