After languishing as a weird, niche cartridge, interest in the 5.7x28mm has seemingly exploded in the last five years. Unlike the 10mm, though, for which renewed interest seemed to appear for no traceable reason, the 5.7 revival is easily explained.

It wasn’t until I heard that Kahr was releasing a new pistol that I realized I hadn’t heard from them in a long while. Kahr roared onto the scene almost 30 years ago, circa 1995, with the K9, an all-steel single-stack 9mm that was nearly the same size as many of the .380s of the day. The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) was in effect, so new magazines holding more than 10 rounds were unavailable for commercial sale.

Smith & Wesson jumping into the shotgun arena was big news, and a surprise to many. An even bigger surprise was the shotgun itself — a bullpup design with double magazine tubes.

(Photo by Mark Fingar) October 11, 2024 By James Tarr Shadow Systems’ CR920, introduced by Keith Wood in Guns & Ammo’s June 2022 issue, has been a huge hit. That was followed by the CR920P, reviewed by Joe Kurtenbach in the July 2023 issue, and now this. As G&A’s Handgun Editor, I had first dibs to evaluate the new CR920X. I recently had an opportunity to tour Galco’s facility in Phoenix, Arizona. I knew Galco Gunleather was a large, successful holster company, dating back to The Famous Jackass Leather Company started in 1969, but I didn’t realize just how large and successful Galco was and is. Galco is the largest leather holster maker in the United States, and has roughly 200 employees working in their 80,000 square-foot facility.

For this column, I’m going to cover a few random things of interest to CCW holders. Springfield’s new Echelon, reviewed in these pages last year, is a great pistol that I think is going to have legs, but holster availability still isn’t as good as I would like. If what you can find out there specifically for the gun isn’t quite what you’re looking for, here are a few options: N8 Tactical’s MultiFlex Holster (N8.CrossBreedHolsters.com).

On the cover: Pack It In! HOWA 1500 Short-Barreled SuperLiteFour days of non-stop trekking across high alpine peaks in Alaska’s Brooks mountain range with a 55+ pound pack and 73⁄4 pound rifle/scope combo was taking its toll. My hunting partner and I were hunting Dall sheep approximately 180 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska’s northernmost mountain range and everything necessary for surviving 14 days of this grueling brand of high-country hunting was secured in our packs.

Currently, it is available in two models, both with full-size frames, one with a 4.25-inch barrel, one with a five-inch barrel. I secured a sample of the second for testing. Hammerli is originally a Swiss company founded in 1863.
