    The New Jersey Symphony opened the 2025 calendar year showcasing their skills with an understated program filled with international flair. Saturday night at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, the New Jersey Symphony featured music from emerging South Korean composer Donghoon Shin alongside two known classical names, Maurice Ravel and Jean Sibelius. The orchestra was led by a German guest conductor, Kevin John Edusei, making his debut here in New Jersey.

    The New Jersey Symphony ushered in the classical Christmas season this weekend in Newark with a cheerful concert performance of Disney’s “The Muppet Christmas Carol.”The music in this 1992 adaptation of Dickens canonical Christmas chestnut is not as well-known as the films and soundtracks that the symphony usually accompanies in its cinema series, but Paul Williams’ songs and Miles Goodman’s score are simple and effective at making Jim Henson’s Muppet take on Victorian London come alive.

    The New Jersey Symphony just proved Duke Ellington’s old adage true once again: It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing. The group’s concert last Thursday at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark presented classics, new music and new riffs on classics. The program didn’t appear particularly enticing on paper. But in person, the music wasn’t just rousing — it had that swing. Much of that swing came from Cuban-born artist Paquito D’Rivera.
