Speeding and drink-driving are among the offences Gardaí are looking out for in their roads operation this weekend. Every Garda on duty this Easter will carry out road policing duties and the Road Safety Authority said these operations are important to remind motorists of the messages around bad driving behaviours. The RSA’s Sarah O'Connor said drink driving is not acceptable.

Why do emigrants decide not to come back to Ireland? Lunchtime Live recently ran a segment on the people who leave Ireland and feel guilty about having moved abroad. Today, it interviewed travel blogger Stephanie Barry Woods who feels the exact opposite. While she admits she often “misses Ireland a lot”, she is overall very happy that she lives abroad. “But I’ve been away for nine-years now,” she said.

People with health insurance have been warned to expect the cost of their policies to jump by as much as 20% when they renew this year. Yesterday, the Health Insurance Alliance released its latest report which revealed that 2.25 million people in the Republic have health insurance - or 46% of the population. On The Hard Shoulder, Dermot Goode of Totalhealthcover.ie said insurers would be pleased to see that people are still taking out policies despite recent price hikes.

A Green Party Councillor has called for tolls on the M50 to be abolished. Currently, car drivers pay between €2.50 to €3.80 to use the section of the M50 between Junction 6 (N3 Blanchardstown) and Junction 7 (N4 Lucan). However, Ballyfermot-Drimnagh representative Ray Cunningham said the village of Chapelizod has developed a “major problem with traffic” and he believes it is partly caused by people driving through it to avoid motorway tolls.

HAP limits are currently not meeting what it takes to actually rent a house in Ireland, the Simon Communities have said. Their latest Locked Out of the Market survey, the organisation found only 3.5% of rental properties across the country were available to Housing Assistance Payment recipients. It also concluded that the HAP is not sufficient to cover rent in Cork or Limerick cities. Executive Director at the Simon Communities Ber Grogan said the HAP system needs to be overhauled.
