Increasing truck weights is simply a bad idea, according to the executive director of the National Association of County Engineers. “If you want to put heavier trucks on the roads and the bridges, you’re asking for some sort of catastrophe at some point,” Kevan Stone told Land Line Now in a recent interview. Stone said that proposals such as increasing the maximum truck weight to 91,000 pounds raise safety concerns.

Since December 2010, motor carriers have been subjected to a Safety Measurement System that has taken on new names and been updated from time to time. Problem is, the end result has changed very little. That remains true with the latest unveiling of proposed updates to the CSA Safety Measurement System by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Wednesday, Nov. 20. The agency is looking to change nine different approaches to the CSA/SMS methodology.

We’ve all seen it either in real life or at least on television – some angry, bordering on unhinged individual throwing wild punches in a fit of rage, hitting nothing. It’s comical to watch. And we’re seeing a reaction like that to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s newly released proposed broker transparency rule.
