WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell, CPA, released a report Wednesday saying that several hospitals billed state employees for over 5 times the acquisition cost for cancer drugs. The hospitals used the 340B Drug Pricing Program, which allows for hospitals to get some drugs for cheaper in order to help keep costs low for providers in low-income and rural communities.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Daytoon Distributors, known for Blue Shark Vodka, has filed a civil lawsuit for at least $75,000 in damages for thousands of tequila bottles that it says went missing in transit in Dec. 2023. The lawsuit was filed on Friday, April 26, 2024, to hold liable Tazmanian Freight Forwarding and Landstar Express America.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The University of North Carolina Governance Committee voted on April 17 to repeal and replace its diversity and inclusion (D&I) policy. The proposed repeal will be sent to the full board for a vote on the consent agenda in May. Unless it is removed from the consent agenda, the appeal will be then passed without discussion. The proposal replaces its existing policy 300.8.5, which establishes the D&I office along with the D&I council.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - About 90 fees at the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles are set to increase on July 1 by about 19 percent, per the DMV. “As directed by state law, the DMV is required to adjust fees and rates every four years, based on the percentage change in the annual Consumer Price Index during the past four years. The increase will be 19.18 percent for about 90 license and registration-related fees,” a DMV announcement states.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - About 56 central office positions and about 224 school staff members are proposed to be cut in the latest proposal for the New Hanover County Schools fiscal year 2025 budget. Officials are working to nail down the details at a budget session this Thursday, March 21. The district began looking for ways to cut costs due to a budget shortfall of about $20 million compared to FY 2024.

New Hanover County Chief Strategy Officer Jennifer Rigby and Wilmington Housing and Neighborhood Services Director Rachel LaCoe gave the presentation. The plan is part of the city and county’s ongoing attempts to make a strategy to handle the homeless population in the local area.
