The 2035 Women’s World Cup, set to be held in the UK, will feature 48 teams, FIFA has announced. The FIFA Council voted on Friday to expand the competition from the 2031 finals onwards. That tournament is set to be awarded to the United States with support from other nations in the region. The change does not come as a surprise, with bid documents for the 2031 and 2035 tournaments published in March mentioning the current 32-team format remained “subject to change”.

Xabi Alonso will step down as head coach of Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season, the German club have announced. Alonso has been heavily linked with the Real Madrid head coach position after a remarkable two and a half years at Leverkusen. Last season the former Liverpool and Real midfielder led Leverkusen to a domestic double, which included going unbeaten for the whole Bundesliga campaign.

David Kogan has been endorsed to chair football’s independent regulator by a select committee of MPs but has been urged to take “concrete steps” to demonstrate he will act impartially. Kogan told MPs on the Culture, Media and Sport committee on Wednesday that he donated to the Labour leadership campaigns of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy in 2020, and has also made financial contributions to other members of the party.
