Tampa General Hospital facilities staff anchor the AquaFence into the concrete along the hospital’s perimeter in preparation for hurricane season. Earlier this year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted an 85% chance that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season would be above normal, and it was right. In what is considered a normal year, the Atlantic hurricane season spanning from June 1 to Nov. 30 produces about three major hurricanes of a Category 3 or higher.

Technology seems to advance at an hourly pace these days, with generative artificial intelligence (AI) leading in explosive growth and adoption in the past year. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has opened the next edition of ASCE 24, Flood Resistant Design and Construction, for public comment. The standard is referenced in the International Codes® (I-Codes®) and states the minimum requirements and expected performance for the siting, design and construction of buildings and structures in flood hazard areas that are subject to building code requirements.
