On a breezy day earlier this month, Darrel Smith, a catcher for the Division 1 Clippers, achieved a career-defining moment after 17 years in The Villages Recreational Softball League — he crossed 1,000 career hits. In a 20-19 victory over the Shorebirds, Smith became one of 19 players in The Villages D1 history to reach the milestone.
