This week’s book has so many characters and plot twists that I’ve decided to give a thumbnail sketch. Don’t pay any attention to the title in Dave Dobson’s “What Grows from the Dead.”Morris Drummond isn’t having a good year. About the time his widowed mother died, his university shut down his department. Unemployed and severely depressed, Morris returned to Fairwater, North Carolina. Unable to move forward, he uses his mom’s Chevy Cobalt to drive for PeopleRide. His only client is Steve.
Another visit with Eve Dallas, Roarke

Decided to read J.D. Robb’s “Payback in Death” during our drive to Sioux Narrows. As expected, it held my interest all the way. Lt. Eve Dallas and her super-rich husband Roarke have been on a much-needed vacation. A lazy two weeks in Greece, followed by a chaotic week with Roarke’s family in Ireland, did the trick. Both Eve and Roarke were loners until they rediscovered Roarke’s family. As much as they enjoy country life, they are happy to return to the hustle and bustle of New York.
‘The Wolf Gift’ natural winner for Anne Rice

This week I revisited one of my favorite authors. Anne Rice. I’m not sure when she published her Wolf Gift Chronicles, but I discovered book one, “The Wolf Gift,” on Infosoup. I must say, it was pure Anne Rice; intriguing but extremely wordy. The Golding family has called San Francisco home for generations and done well. This generation includes Grace, Phil, James and Reuben. Phil is a poet and philosopher with a warm and dreamy outlook on life.
Murder mystery has paranormal twists

I was expecting something paranormal when I selected “Dead Woman’s Pond” by Elle E. Ire, but I got a whole lot more. (Warning: If you can’t deal with same-sex relationships you might not like this book.) If you can look beyond the sexual preferences of the protagonists, you’ll find a pretty compelling plot with a paranormal twist. Flynn Dalton realized that she was “different” at her grandmother’s funeral. While standing near the casket, Flynn saw and spoke with her late grandmother.

It was a great success, thanks to the relentless West Chambers County Pilot members and all of our volunteers, sponsors, and of course, our Barbers Hill High School Anchors. Bronchitis sucks! There, I said it, and I mean it! Between coughing, blowing and napping, I had little time to read. In fact, I dozed off after only a few pages. Good thing I had a short, light book to read. I chose the unlikely title “Pastries and Pilfering” by Danielle Collins. This was the third book in her Margot Durand series of cozy mysteries, but it is OK as a short stand-alone book. Margot Durand had a good life and solid marriage until her detective husband was brutally murdered.
Book Woman saga continues with daughter

A few years ago, I read Kim Michele Richardson’s “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek.” It sketches out life in 1930s Kentucky and relates how the women of The Pack Horse Library Project would ride a circuit into the surrounding mountain to deliver library materials to the isolated homes there. This week I discovered the next book in the series, “The Book Woman’s Daughter.”Cussy Mary Lovet had been one of the pioneer book women.

While on InfoSoup, I noticed a comment stating that a series of books by Tim Dorsey were very similar to those by Carl Hiaasen. Since I’m a fan of Hiaasen’s quirky characters, I immediately downloaded Dorsey’s “Triggerfish Twist.”I should have found book one instead of starting with book four in the series. The cast of characters is enormous, so keeping track of them was a real challenge. I can’t begin to do justice to the story, but I will give you a thumbnail sketch.

I don’t know what I was expecting when I selected “Hollow Girl” by Alan Lee, but I got a hard-to-put-down tale about the potential repercussions of child abuse. It takes many chapters to reveal the demons that haunt Roanoke, Virginia, rookie Andie Stackhouse, but I’ll tell you up front. Andie’s ex-military father had a breakdown, and her stunningly beautiful mother supported the family by modeling until she succumbed to cancer.
