Some Internet users in South Africa are reporting slow speeds after repairs to the West Africa Cable System (WACS) started on Sunday. WACS is one of the key submarine fibre cables carrying Internet traffic from Europe to South Africa. It is also a key link between South Africa and the South Atlantic Cable System (SACS), which lands in Angola. The cable system runs from Portugal to a landing station at Yzerfontein, in the Western Cape. It has a design capacity of 14.5Tbps.

Spam is killing voice calls in South Africa faster than voice-over IP services like WhatsApp and Skype have ever done. Ask anyone with a cellphone in South Africa and they will likely tell you that they no longer accept calls from numbers they don’t recognise. The only people who don’t have this luxury are people who need to accept unknown calls for business purposes. Some might take the extra step of using Truecaller to look up numbers to see whether it’s someone they should answer or call back.

MTN has launched a pilot motorbike SIM delivery service for its Shesh@5G and home Internet packages. The service promises delivery within two hours in select areas of Johannesburg. The mobile operator launched its Shesh@5G Home Internet packages in March, offering customers a taste of its 5G speeds for under R400 per month. “This is another ambition to bring seamless 5G Home connectivity to customers,” said MTN South Africa general manager for online and telesales Tania Ladopoulou.

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has applied for leave to appeal a recent court ruling which found that cryptocurrency is not money and doesn’t fall within existing exchange control regulations. Specifically, it said the Pretoria High Court erred in finding that cryptocurrency is not considered money for the purposes of South Africa’s Exchange Control Regulations (Excon).
