The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) got a bloody nose in the Mauritian Supreme Court on Thursday following an attempt to block the election of a new Afrinic board. The African Network Information Centre (Afrinic) is the Regional Internet Registry for the continent and Indian Ocean region. Afrinic has been without a board or CEO since 2023 and was placed in receivership as part of an attempt to revive the organisation.

As of last year, 4.5 million South African homes have been passed by a fibre network operator, BMIT founder and director Brian Neilson has said. Neilson said this figure takes into account homes passed by more than one operator, referred to as “overbuild” in the industry. Stats SA estimates that there are over 19 million households in the country, however Neilson noted that the addressable market for residential fibre is around 12.5 million homes.

High drama gripped Africa’s Internet Registry today as the Supreme Court of Mauritius heard an appeal against an injunction blocking the election of a new board of directors, and set it aside. Following the ruling, the African Network Information Centre (Afrinic) election committee immediately notified members that electronic voting begins today, Wednesday, 18 June 2025. The date for in-person voting at a venue in Mauritius remains unchanged — Monday, 23 June 2025.

TransUnion and MTN have responded to questions about a new service they launched yesterday that can compute a credit score for someone based on their call data records. Called TransUnion Telco Data Score, the companies said the system would help millions of South Africans with limited or no formal credit history gain access to financial services.

TransUnion Africa, in partnership with MTN and its API marketplace, Chenosis, has launched a credit score alternative called TransUnion Telco Data Score. The companies describe the service as a first-of-its-kind credit scoring solution that uses mobile phone call data records to help millions of South Africans with limited or no formal credit history gain access to financial services.
