    Summer is sea turtle nesting season along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, and national parks are a great place to catch a glimpse of these iconic sea creatures. Most nests are laid in the early summer months, and although it varies by species, most eggs hatch 45 to 60 days later. A few parks have special programs where you can learn more about sea turtles, or even watch mamas lumber ashore to lay their eggs at night or hatchlings make their way to the open water in the early morning.

    Smokejumpers were quickly deployed to battle a wildfire at Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve along the border of eastern Alaska and Canada. The fire burned about 600 acres before light precipitation on May 26 helped tamp it down. Six smokejumpers who were fighting the fire with sprinklers and hoses demobilized but the fire will continue to be monitored. The blaze was named the Kathul Fire.

    Yellowstone National Park's Dunraven Pass, which runs between Canyon Village and Tower Fall in the Wyoming section of the park, is officially open for the summer season. "This means all roads in the park are open and accessible," a post on the park's Facebook account read. Most roads in Yellowstone are closed from early November to late April. The only one typically open in winter runs through the Montana section from Gardiner to Cooke City.

A new study shows a negative correlation between native Northwestern pond turtles in the park and the presence of invasive American bullfrogs.

    Restoration and repairs continue at Dry Tortugas National Park, nearly eight years after Hurricane Irma caused extensive damage at the site. A recent social media post announced that work is complete on the historic Loggerhead Key Lighthouse keeper's residence, located on one of the seven small islands that make up the park.
