In November 2023, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) introduced a series of new measures in a bid to tackle greenwashing and increase the transparency over claims regulated firms make about the sustainability of their products and services offered to consumers. Greenwashing refers to a practice where false or misleading claims are made about a product or service that implies they are more environmentally sound than they actually are.

In August 2023 we discussed the proposed changes regarding mediation in the small claims track and HMCTS have now confirmed that parties will need to attend a mediation appointment as part of the court process on all small claim cases filed from 22 May 2024. HMCTS have confirmed that “attending a mediation session will become an integrated, required step” and it will apply to all small claims that involve a money dispute.

Hugh Grant has recently (17 April 2024) spoken about how he has reluctantly settled his claim against News Group Newspapers (NGN), publishers for The Sun newspaper, for an “enormous” sum of money. Mr Grant’s claim is just one of several brought by celebrities in recent years over the alleged phone hacking scandals by some newspapers.
