MethodsWe conducted a retrospective longitudinal study using individual patient records in multiple centres.29 Maternity inpatient stays from 13 April 2015 to 29 February 2020 were extracted from the hospital Patient Administration System for three Acute National Health Service (NHS) Trusts in England. Data after February 2020 were not studied due to service changes during the covid pandemic. NHS Trusts comprise one or more hospitals operating as a group under a combined management.

I’m calling on all nurses to resolve to take action to highlight the true value of nursing. That nurses are undervalued – and underpaid – has been highlighted for all to see in the industrial disputes and strike action that took place in the UK last year. Yet nurses continue to be rated in public opinion polls as the most trusted profession.
