The next government must implement a Clean Air Act that establishes the human right to breathe clean air, precisely and explicitly in UK law. This Act must require the UK to ensure that air pollution is lowered to at least interim World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines by 2030 across the country, and confirm a commitment to full alignment with the WHO guidelines in the shortest time frame.

In 2017, the Mayor of London committed to the Breathe Life campaign and thereby pledged to reduce fine particulate matter (PM2.5) to the now-outdated WHO recommendation of 10ug/m3 PM2.5 as an annual mean across the city. In 2021 the WHO updated its recommendations for air quality based on strong evidence that air pollution is harmful to health at significantly lower levels than previously understood.

With a General Election approaching, the issue of air pollution and its impact on our children's health must be placed high on the agenda. With the Labour Party’s apparent backing away from their £28bn a year commitment to green investment, we need to make our voices heard and urge Sir Keir Starmer to stay strong on the environment. The next Government will be leading the nation through the defining years leading up to 2030.

Residents in Manchester City Council head to the polls on 2nd May 2024 and we are campaigning to ensure that strong action to tackle air pollution is high on the council agenda. In 2022, Manchester had the highest nitrogen dioxide concentrations of any local authority in the UK, and this needs to change urgently. We’re calling for:A pathway to reach the 2021 World Health Organization guideline targets for healthy air with clear interim targets and timescales.  A Clean Air cabinet member.
