    You see something that stands out in the distance; a surfboard fin, a photo, a cross, wilted flowers, a letter or card, a teddy bear, and then the realisation sinks into your knowing like the tide disappearing into thirsty sand. Someone died here. Someone who was loved, ended their story at this place. I am an avid collector of unconventional memorials and their stories: images, monuments and moments signifying life’s final page.

    Hello friends,If you’re a regular follower of this newsletter you’ll know that last week I opened the cage door and released a new show called Difficult Conversations with Jane Hutcheon. During the two events, our fab POWW (Panel of Wit & Wonder) helped to answer questions posed by the audience. In both shows, we had many more questions than we could possibly answer. This thrilled me because I realised there was a thirst engaging with difficult conversations with civility instead of rancour.

    Family history isn’t just about ancestors. One day you and I will be ancestors. We don’t know whether our descendants or people of the future will be interested in exploring our lives however we each have a unique take on what it’s like to be living at this particular time. If we want to collect people’s stories, an excellent way to do this is to put your reporter’s hat on and become an interviewer. Lots of people are naturally skilled at this.
