This year’s 41st Sundance Film Festival turned out to be a quieter festival without as much star power as prior years. Whether it is because of the Los Angeles fires or the changing landscape of the entertainment industry, there has been a paucity of bidding wars by entertainment companies for independent films. Even movies with A-list stars such Jennifer Lopez (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Olivia Colman, (Jimba) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Thing With Feathers) failed to land a deal.

PARK CITY, Utah — The Sundance Film Festival, the pioneer of promoting independent film makers, kicked off its 10 day run Thursday in this sub-zero snowy mountain town. This year’s Sundance, the 41st edition of the film fest, is taking place in the town library, a high school auditorium and various movie theaters in Park City and nearby Salt Lake City during its first six days.

The Sundance Film Festival is known for showcasing the work of independent film makers and for documentaries that entertain and shine a light on social and global health, economic, environmental and societal issues. Sometimes you’re ready for a little escapism and lightheartedness though, and I found three movies at Sundance that lightened my mood. And you’ll be able to watch at least two of these movies soon.

PARK CITY, Utah — The Sundance Film Festival is in full swing with freezing temperatures, long lines and a scramble for tickets. Usually after the first weekend of the festival a large number of movies have been acquired. Not so this year. (Though Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain was scooped up by Searchlight Pictures for $10 million.) Many movies came to the festival having been financed by a studio.
