As you approach Diego Rivera’s last great project, Museo Anahuacalli in southwest Mexico City, the landscape changes dramatically. Vivacious street life gives way to the eerily arid landscape of El Pedregal de San Angel, an immense sprawl of rock formed several thousand years ago by the eruption of the Xitle volcano. Basaltic lava flows engulfed pyramids, temples and ancient settlements and gave the area its peculiar rocky character.
