EBRI followed up with a deeper dive into spending trends among retirees with its 2024 Spending in Retirement Survey. I spoke with Bridget Bearden, research and development strategist with EBRI and author of the study, about its conclusions. Your survey uncovered several 'concerning trends.' What were they?

Right before Christmas, I came across a study by The Senior List reporting how much grandparents spend on their grandchildren nowadays. The final tally: nearly $4,000 annually, on average. Yikes! The bulk of that went toward big-ticket expenses, such as school tuition or helping to buy a car. But the list also included gifts for special occasions ($400), clothing or shoes ($300), dining out ($300) and entertainment ($200). Of course, every family’s circumstances and finances are different.

In my September 2024 “Money Smart Women” column, I referred to the “Big Three,” a trio of multiple-choice questions designed more than 20 years ago to measure respondents’ knowledge of the ABCs of personal finance: compound interest, inflation and risk diversification. Since then, that quiz has become the gold standard in measuring financial literacy in the United States and in countries around the world.
