Which is better, Medium or Substack? If you’ve also been wondering that, I understand. But also, it’s the wrong question because it’s like comparing apples and oranges. It's been a hard month for me. First, my dad was sick and had to go to intensive care. I still hear the beeping of the instruments. One week later, I had to call 911 for my mom. Later, I was lying on a cold operation table myself, thinking about my life. The ups and downs and what they want to tell me. Three big waves suddenly hit me in the face without a warning, and I needed to surf them. I went through the wringer. These three big waves rocked my world.

Why couldn’t Black people use the same public washrooms as me? Decades of unjust laws were in effect in South Africa for most of the 20th century. Emily — our live-in maid, took care of us during the day and did most of the cleaning and washing. But, in the evening, when we sat down to eat she couldn’t sit at the same table. Granny lived with us. Her eyes had deteriorated and she could no longer go out and about. Emily would spend hours talking to her.
