In the Chinese zodiac, 2024 is The Year of the Wood Dragon. I humbly suggest that it also be known as The Year of the Ninja Mouse. Janine came up with this moniker in reference to the critters that made an appearance in her house a few months back. Mice make their way indoors when the weather turns cold. This is particularly true in older houses, where they have more little cracks and crannies to use.

This week, I was all set to take a strip off Galen Weston for reducing the discount from 50 per cent to 30 per cent on products that have reached their best before date. I, for one, had decided out of disgust not to shop Dominion anymore. Then Loblaws reversed the decision after a huge backlash from customers. You know Galen Weston, the president of Loblaws – known as Dominion here – the poster child of corporate greed and gouging in the grocery business.

I always have a bit if a problem writing a Christmas column. I don’t want to write about how the whole concept of ‘Peace on Earth’ is going to hell in a hand basket because everyone knows that and nobody wants to be reminded. I hesitate to write about how much I love my living/dining room at Christmas because I am only too aware of how many people would be happy to have a room of any sort at Christmas or any other time of the year.
