A Sunshine Coast motorist possibly drove for hours with a venomous snake slithering around in her car. Snake catcher Dan Busstra, alias Snake Catcher Dan, was called to remove the red-bellied black from the woman’s parked vehicle at Palmwoods last week. “She gave me a call. The boss of a popular seafood business that was forced to shut during a power outage has queried a six-figure electricity bill increase when there is no guarantee of supply. Mooloolaba Fisheries and the Fisheries on the Spit were forced to close for the rest of the day after the power went off about 2pm last Thursday. General manager Paul Schenk said the business was paying $100,000 a year more for electricity this year under a new, three-year contract but could not rely on the power supply.

The Sunshine Coast Council has pressed the pause button on a library and community venue proposed for an area of ongoing growth. The Sippy Downs library and community space had been allocated $5 million in the Sunshine Coast Council’s 2024-25 budget but that funding has been deferred as the council tries to maintain its cash balance.

The developer of a proposed 13-storey hotel and mixed-used development on the Sunshine Coast is moving into position to make use of a pre-Olympic temporary height relaxation. An application by Felix Capital to build 153 units plus restaurants, a function room and nine residential units on a site on Ocean Street, Maroochydore, has been put on hold pending ministerial approval of a Temporary Local Planning Instrument.

A Sunshine Coast craft brewer combining its beer with food has opened in a third location. The Moffat Beach Brewing Co has pulled off a trifecta in the Caloundra area with the opening of The Esplanade Ale House and adjoining takeaway at Bulcock Beach. The Esplanade set-up adds to Moffat Beach Brewing Co’s original brewpub-cafe at Moffat Beach and a production house and tap room at Caloundra West.

The culprits behind three cases of environmental vandalism along the waterfront on the Sunshine Coast are yet to be identified. A year has passed since the Sunshine Coast Council announced it was investigating the destruction of trees and plants across an area about the size of two football fields in the Mudjimba-Marcoola Foreshore Reserve. Testing revealed the vegetation had been poisoned with a herbicide rarely used on the Sunshine Coast.

Flooding has forced the closure – temporarily – of a Sunshine Coast bank branch. The Commonwealth Bank’s branch at the Stockland shopping centre on Bowman Road, Caloundra, has been closed since December 30 following flash flooding. A Commonwealth Bank spokesperson confirmed the Caloundra branch would reopen but was not able to pinpoint a date. “Our first priority is the safety of our employees, customers and members of the public.

A Sunshine Coast resident has questioned when the same noise reduction directive given for Brisbane Airport operations will be applied to Sunshine Coast Airport. Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King directed Airservices Australia to prioritise flights over water by November 30 to reduce the impact of aircraft noise on residents. Ash Ranu, of Mount Coolum, said aircraft noise would become more of a problem on the Sunshine Coast as the airport and the population grew.

Rain topped and tailed 2024 on the Sunshine Coast but residents of one area had wetter feet than others. Figures show what could be considered a new record for rainfall at Caloundra. A weather station on Sugar Bag Road clocked a total of 2615mm for the year, according to OzForecast. The figure is 55mm more than the previous highest figure, according to historical records for the next nearest measuring location.

Sunshine Coast motorists paid about $9 more to fill their fuel tanks yesterday than their counterparts two hours north. The price of unleaded petrol on the Coast was 186.9 cents a litre, according to the RACQ’s Fair Fuel Price app, 15.3 cents a litre dearer than Maryborough’s 171.6 cents a litre.
