SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new COVID variant is bringing a painful side effect to California. The variant is officially called NB.1.8.1, or Nimbus. Some patients say it's causing them such a severe sore throat that they feel like they're swallowing razor blades. "Your throat is so dry, so cracked, it's so painful, it's even hard to drink sometimes," said Dr. Muhammad Azam, a physician with Sharp Community Medical Group.

The San Diego County Fair kicked off Wednesday with its "Summer Pet-tacular" theme, bringing a mix of nostalgia, new attractions and community celebration to Del Mar. "There's nostalgia, there's newness, there's really, it's a community celebration in a way that you don't get at other theme parks, at other events," a fair representative said. Among the new attractions this year is the Thunderbird ride in the kid zone.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on June 3 ordered the renaming of a Navy ship named after gay rights icon Harvey Milk. It's unclear what the new name will be, but it's set to be officially renamed later this month. The USNS Harvey Milk was christened here in San Diego back in 2021. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A uniquely colorful therapy dog is bringing smiles and comfort to patients at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego. Zoe, a rainbow-colored therapy dog, and her owner, Angela Schoonover, visit the hospital twice a month, bringing moments of joy to children battling serious illnesses. "For me, getting to bring joy and getting to bring peace and love and happiness with Zoe, it's not about their diagnosis or what they're going through," Schoonover says.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Michelle Fernandez's daily walks with her dog Sunny are part of her healing journey after surviving breast cancer. The companionship has been transformative in her recovery. "He takes care of me in ways that I never knew he could," Fernandez said. "I'm forever grateful and indebted to this little animal here."Fernandez got Sunny 11 years ago as one of the first major steps in her new, post-cancer journey as a survivor.
